What is the difference between a 24volt and a 36volt electrical system?
We are installing a solar system on a farm in Namibia and we have been advised by one consultant to install a 24 volt battery system and by another to install a 36 volt system. How do you determine which is the best for your needs?
There are several factors here and some interact with others. Your consultants will be aware of these and will have made choices based on many dozens of things including pricing, panel availability.
Without trying to guess what they are thinking and have planned for you - my preference - all else being equal (and it won't be), I would favor the 36V system - although it will need to be stepped down to voltges more commonly used such as 12 and 24V in some cases. However, you get lower losses at the higher voltage, hence my answer.
And ask yourself, why do they use 250,000V (or whatver) for major power distribution across the national grid? Higher voltages are harder to work with but they chose it because of the efficiencies in it.
If enormous cable runs are involved, cost wil be a definite factor.
It is a really valid quesion - ask each consultant why. They will have the answer and should guide you, hopefully in a simple way that allows you to make the best decision. You are paying them - they are the experts - ask them.
